I used the hands as a symbol of people coming together. Usually, when people hold hands it is like a deep connection, like what the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have with the land. I chose to make blue dots because they represent sadness and with relationships it hasn’t always been equal. A long time ago they didn’t have the same rights, they were made to work in communities with not much pay and didn’t get treated well and their children were stolen from their families, so they weren’t able to learn their language or culture. I painted white hands with a brown outline because blank usually means loneliness, and now they are coming together they don’t have to be invisible.
Reconciliation means…
Reconciliation means forgiving someone who wants to be forgiven. The people who took the children away, and their lives and culture, can now see what they did wrong and want to be forgiven. I respect that the First Nations peoples were there before us and we took that from them. I will try to listen more to what they have to say, learn more about their traditions and culture and learn some Ngunnawal language to share with other people.
